Upcoming patriotic service

Hi everybody-

We wanted to make you local folks aware of a special patriotic-themed service
coming up this Sunday, July 1st, at our church, First Baptist Church of Troy.

We have quite a unique speaker this year!

Here is a short blurb on him:

"September 10, 2001, First Officer Steve Scheibner packed his suitcase and waited for the phone call finalizing his assignment to fly American Airlines Flight 11, from Boston to Los Angeles. The call never came. In My Seat recounts the events leading up to Flight 11 and the subsequent death of Tom McGuinness in the seat that should have been filled by Steve Scheibner. Long before the events of September 11th, God was preparing Steve to become a "Borrowed-Time Believer" and a man who could share the picture of Christ's substitutionary atonement on the cross; a picture clearly painted by Tom as he filled Steve's seat that day. Steve's story shows you the God who works behind the scenes to use even the most horrific events for His glory."

Here is a short video that has been put together about his experience:

Mr. Scheibner will be speaking at our church in person on July 1st,
during Sunday School (9:00 AM) and in the morning service (10:15 AM).
It will be a very interesting and inspiring story of faith and providence!

Hope to see you there!

A much overdue Lansing update...

It has been a while since I gave you all an update on what's going on with me (Jon) over in Lansing!

Probably the biggest news is that I wrapped up my internship with Senator Mike Green after a year-and-a-half stint to start a part-time position with Michigan Family Forum, a family values advocacy group based in downtown Lansing! It is a very exciting development in my life, and I am looking forward to seeing many good things happen over this summer!

As part of a project that MFF is doing for the upcoming election, I had the opportunity to attend some training over in Milwaukee, WI, which just so happened to be the week before the recall election for Governor Scott Walker! So, after the training was over, I and some others stayed in Wisconsin, and helped do some campaigning for Wisconsin Family Action, (an organization very similar to MFF)

Apparently, some warring neighbors!

We campaigned with some students from Patrick Henry College

It was a lot of fun, and obviously our efforts did pay off in the end!

Back in Lansing, I had the opportunity to attend the 2012 Michigan Prayer Breakfast.
Here are a couple of pics from our time there.

State Senator Mark Jansen, and some CBC guys

State Senator Mike Green, and State Representative Ed McBroom
with their respective interns

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette gives
David and I a lesson in campaigning - always pour coffee for everyone!

Earlier this month, I had the great privilege of being a recipient of the
2012 Frank Fitzgerald Public Service Award. This award is named after the late
Frank M. Fitzgerald, a Michigan legislator that died while in office.
One of Representative Fitzgerald's greatest accomplishments was the implementation
of the Graduated Drivers License here in Michigan.

A little more about the Fitzgerald award:
"The Frank M. Fitzgerald Public Service Award honors dedicated young volunteers in the Michigan Legislature. Above and beyond their legislative service, Fitzgerald scholars also are recognized for their abilities in academics, communicating and volunteering."

Here are a couple of pics from the award ceremony:

The three winners - Emily, Andrew, and Me, with Mrs. Fitzgerald

Andrew and I with Mr. Vissher, of SSI fame....

My parents and I with John Lazet, my first boss as an intern...
... and also my Mom's Junior High science teacher!!

After the awards ceremony, we went over to the Senate Chamber, where we
were recognized by the Senators and staff..

Senator Green introducing me...

I also took our family over to see where I have interned in Senator Green's office
for the last year and a half...

Rebecca wanted to challenge the "Big Kitty"

We also stopped by to see our former state representative, Andrea LaFontaine!
We were very sad that we moved out of her district, but are getting
involved politically in our new area...

-Andrea and us-

Best wishes to Andrea as she seeks re-election in a re-drawn district this fall!

So, that's a little update on what's going on with me in Lansing!

P.S. If any of you here locally in SE Michigan are looking to do some volunteering
for the  upcoming election, get in touch with me, and I will send you some information
about the project I am working on - Volunteers are needed!!!

Melody's Graduation Party!

Melody just had her church graduation party a week or so ago!
What our church does is host a graduation open house for all the graduating
seniors in the church, so we all don't have to spend our next four weekends
hitting 3 separate graduation parties each Saturday!

The open house went quite well - here are a couple of pictures!

The graduate!

A bunch of little friends

Everyone enjoyed talking to everyone!

Little brother Joe and big sister Mel

Melody and Micah

Another 2012 grad - Sammy!

Hanan and Melody - both 2012 grads!

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
